The BBC have started a trial of 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) video on its iPlayer streaming platform.
The test involves a short, 4 minute long, piece of footage taken from Planet Earth which promises to reveal more detail and show more vibrant colours than possible before.
Most users won’t be able to see the footage as it is intended at the moment. As a start, the BBC are using the iPlayer platform to show the content, but in the future there will probably be 4k channels. like we have HD ones now.
HDR promises to show more of a change than moving from HD to 4k. Time will tell as more content is made available in the newer formats. Currently Amazon and NEtflix both offer some content in HDR and 4k, BT and Sky offer movies and sport in 4K but not HDR.
